How to Set Up Google Analytics 4 Tracking Tags in Reservit Accommodation: Conversion Tracking

Article summary: this guide explains how to install Google Analytics 4 (GA4) on your Reservit Accommodation booking engine and track your bookings as conversions. You will see how many bookings, and how much revenue, your website and campaigns generate.

The 5 key steps to set up your tracking tags:

  1. Get your GA4 Measurement ID: in Google Analytics, it starts with "G-".

  2. Open the tag manager: "Management of my property" > "Reservation Page Customization" > "Tracking tags".

  3. Create the "G4 - Tracking" tag on booking steps 1 to 4, to measure visits.

  4. Create the "G4 - Ecommerce" tag on step 5, to record each confirmed booking and its amount.

  5. Save and check: the tags become active within 24 to 48 hours. Then check that data is coming into GA4.

Why follow this guide? Without these tags, your online bookings do not appear in Google Analytics. You cannot measure the return on your campaigns or see which channels bring you guests.

Before you start: find your Measurement ID

In Google Analytics, go to Admin > Data collection and modification > Data streams, then open your Web stream. Copy the Measurement ID (format G-XXXXXXXXXX).

⚠️ Old codes starting with UA- (Universal Analytics) have not worked since July 2023. If your property still uses a "Google Analytics Universal" tag, delete it and replace it by following this guide.

Step by step

  1. Click "Management of my property" > "Reservation Page Customization" > "Tracking tags". Tip: the "Available tags" section lists the tags you can insert, grouped by category.

Tag 1: visit tracking

  1. Click "New".

  2. Click [Common tags] > "G4 - Tracking".

  3. In the code that appears, replace both occurrences of G-XXXXXXXX with your Measurement ID: once in the gtag/js?id= line, and once in the gtag('config', …) line.

  4. Fill in the settings:

    • Label: for example "GA4 - Visits". This name appears in the summary table, and as a comment in the page code.

    • List of pages concerned: tick steps 1 to 4. Mobile steps are included automatically. Do not tick step 5, which is covered by tag 2.

    • Location: choose the page header (<head>) if the option is available.

  5. Click "Save".

Tag 2: booking tracking

  1. Click "New" again, then [Common tags] > "G4 - Ecommerce".

  2. Replace both occurrences of G-XXXXXXXX with the same Measurement ID. Do not change the rest of the code: values in braces, such as {#amountTTC}, are filled in automatically by Reservit with each booking's data.

  3. Fill in the settings:

    • Label: for example "GA4 - Bookings".

    • List of pages concerned: tick step 5 only (booking confirmation).

    • Location: the same as for tag 1.

  4. Click "Save".

  5. Once saved, allow 24 to 48 hours of validation before the tags become active.

Check that it works

Once the tags are active, make a test booking, then open Reports > Realtime in GA4: the purchase event should appear. Revenue then shows under Reports > Monetization > Ecommerce purchases.

In GA4, the purchase event counts as a conversion ("key event") by default: there is nothing to turn on in Admin.

Tip: if your website and the booking engine are on different domains, set up cross-domain tracking in GA4 (Admin > Data streams > your stream > Configure tag settings > Configure your domains). Add both domains, otherwise bookings will be credited to "referral" traffic instead of their real source.
